Proposed codification of ethicacy in the publication process.Jo Ann Carland, James W. Carland & Carroll D. Aby - 1992 - Journal of Business Ethics 11 (2):95 - 104.
The pressure for publication is ever present in academe. Rules for submission are elucidated by conferences, proceedings and journals for the benefit of authors; however, the rules for reviewers and editors are not so well established or consistent. This treatise examines examples of abuse of the editorial process and points to a need for formal recognition of rules for review. The manuscript culminates with proposed Codes of Ethics for researchers, referees and editors and suggestions for improvement of the peer review (...)

    Stylistics and Synonymity.E. D. Hirsch Jr - 1975 - Critical Inquiry 1 (3):559-579.
Among philosophers as well as linguists the battle is still joined between those who view the correlation between meaning and linguistic form as strictly determined by convention and those who argue for the essential indeterminacy of the relationship between meaning and form.1 Plato's Cratylus aside, the philosphical dialogue that forms the locus classicus of this debate is the following: "You're holding it upside down!" Alice interrupted. "To be sure I was!" Humpty Dumpty said gaily, as she turned it round for (...)

    The Theory of Categories. [REVIEW]Carroll D. W. Hildebrand - 1984 - Idealistic Studies 14 (1):88-90.
These essays were dictated by Brentano during the last ten years of his life, between 1907 and 1917. They constitute a Neo-Aristotelian scholastic metaphysics. At best, they represent an atypical idealism expressed as a personal realism in the form of an epistemological monism with a qualitative dualism and a quantitative pluralism, a study in philosophia perennis.

    Four Reasonable Men. [REVIEW]Carroll D. W. Hildebrand - 1986 - Idealistic Studies 16 (3):282-283.
The purpose of the book is to reveal through biography, not philosophy, the essence of reasonableness. The author’s definition of reasonableness, while not excluding intelligence and learning, is “a settled disposition to guide one’s belief and conduct by the evidence. It is a bent of the will to order one’s thoughts by the relevant facts, to order one’s practice in the light of the values, to make reflective judgments the compass of one’s belief and action”.

    Time and Reality In American Philosophy. [REVIEW]Carroll D. W. Hildebrand - 1988 - Idealistic Studies 18 (3):280-281.
To understand modern philosophy, one must cross the bridge via David Hume and Immanuel Kant. This well applies to the current philosophical tendencies in American philosophy during the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth.

This volume is propaganda for epistemic realism. Whether combined with monism or dualism, its consequences and conclusions for speculative philosophy raise difficult problems.

    Philosophy, Counseling, and Psychotherapy.Elliot D. Cohen & . Samuel Zinaich Jr (eds.) - 2013 - Cambridge Scholars.
Can philosophy help ordinary people confront their personal or interpersonal problems of living? Can it help a couple whose marriage is on the rocks, or someone going through a midlife crisis, or someone depressed over the death of a significant other, or who suffers from anxiety about making a life change? These and many other behavioral and emotional problems are ordinarily referred to psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, or other mental health specialists. Less mainstream is the possibility of consulting a (...)

    Calling God “Father”.Donald D. Hook & Alvin F. Kimel Jr - 1995 - Faith and Philosophy 12 (2):207-222.
This essay explores the significance and implications of the causal theory of reference for the current debate on the necessity and exchangeability of the divine title ‘Father’ in the discourse of the Church. Identifying ‘Father’ as a vocative term historically grounded in the speech of Jesus and his Apostles, the authors assert that it successfully refers to God, functioning very much like a proper name. They also identify linguistic barriers to its replacement by other terms.

  26. Aristotle and the Origins of Natural Rights.Jr: Fred D. Miller - 1996 - Review of Metaphysics 49 (4):873-908.
The disagreement over whether Aristotle recognized rights in some form unavoidably involves disagreement over what rights are, and the theory of rights itself is still highly contested. There is no consensus concerning how " right'? is to be defined, how rights are to be theoretically grounded, or how rights theory is to be applied in particular circumstances. This is not, however, a good reason to dismiss the issue of whether there are rights in Aristotle: for Aristotle, like modern rights theorists, (...)

    Meaning and Significance Reinterpreted.E. D. Hirsch Jr - 1984 - Critical Inquiry 11 (2):202-225.
Some people have found my distinction between meaning and significance useful. In the following revision of that distinction, I hope to improve its accuracy and perhaps, therefore, its utility as well. My impulse for making the revision has been my realization, very gradually achieved, that meaning is not simply an affair of consciousness and unconsciousness. In 1967, in Validity in Interpretation, I roundly asserted that “there is no magic land of meanings outside human consciousness.” 1 That assertion would be true (...)

The work is aimed at jurists as well as legal and practical philosophers. Edited by the renowned theorist Enrico Pattaro and his team, this book is a classical reference work that would be of great interest to legal and practical philosophers as well as to jurists and legal scholar at all levels. The work is divided in two parts. The (...)

  36. Wittgenstein within the Philosophy of Religion.Thomas D. Carroll - 2014 - New York: Palgrave-Macmillan.
The commonly held view that Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion entails an irrationalist defense of religion known as 'fideism' loses plausibility when contrasted with recent scholarship on Wittgenstein's corpus, biography, and other sources. This book reevaluates the place of Wittgenstein in the philosophy of religion and charts a path forward for the subfield by advancing three themes. The first is that philosophers of religion should question received interpretations of philosophers, such as Wittgenstein, as well as the meanings of key terms used (...)

  38. The Problem of Relevance and the Future of Philosophy of Religion.Thomas D. Carroll - 2016 - Metaphilosophy 47 (1):39-58.
Despite the growth in research in philosophy of religion over the past several decades, recent years have seen a number of critical studies of this subfield in an effort to redirect the methods and topics of inquiry. This article argues that in addition to problems of religious parochialism described by critics such as Wesley Wildman, the subfield is facing a problem of relevance. In responding to this problem, it suggests that philosophers of religion should do three things: first, be critically (...)

  42. Communitarian and Liberal Theories of the Good.Jeffrey Paul and Fred D. Miller Jr - 1990 - Review of Metaphysics 43 (4):803-830.
A MAJOR THESIS OF CONTEMPORARY LIBERAL PHILOSOPHY is that its theory of justice, which incorporates strong rights to negative liberty, must be prior to and independent of a theory of the good. This priority is necessary, according to liberal theorists, in view of the requirement that any adequate theory accommodate a plurality of contending views of the good, no one of which is capable of eliciting public assent to it. Recent critics of liberalism have disputed this thesis, maintaining instead that (...)
